Phobiaphile Magazine
Category: Editorial, Experimental
Completed: Dec 2022
Tools: Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator
This is an academic project. Phobiaphile is a magazine for fans of horror movies, books, games, and more. It is comprised of 40+ pages, which I made using original imagery and six published articles (used for educational purposes only).
The Masthead
The first part of the project was creating a masthead (logo) and full cover.
Being a horror magazine, I decided that a scratchy, handwritten look would suit the logo. I hand-drew this logo with a pen several times before scanning it into Photoshop and Illustrator.
Its rough lines and circular formation are memorable and serve the horror theme well.
The Cover
Phobiaphile’s graphics are inspired by 80’s punk magazines, which often used hand-written text, cut-out images, and a gritty paper texture. I recreated these visuals by using both traditional (paper, marker, pen) and digital tools (Photoshop) .
Here are progressions of the covers from start to finish:

Articles & IMAGERY
Each article required completely original images – in other words, no movie screenshots or even official characters. This meant making vague references to iconic horror franchises or themes instead of using iconic imagery.
The article below is about Hellraiser (2022). To put it simply, the movie is about a puzzle box that acts as a portal to hell. Since I could not use a picture of the actual box, I had to represent it through other means.

Final Thoughts
I had a lot of fun putting this together! I was able to experiment with photography, image-making, and layouts. Given that this is a digital magazine, I was also able to bend some print design rules, such as ignoring margins.
Working on this project made me gain a serious appreciation for editorial design.
